Ever wonder how to get started building a Medication Therapy Management (MTM) practice?  Interested in learning more to enhance the MTM practice you have started?  During this 7-week, online course you will receive valuable information to understand the “business” side of starting and growing an MTM practice: Planning, Infrastructure, Payment and Marketing and Maintaining the Practice. In addition to presentations from successful MTM pharmacists, you will have access to a network of current MTM practitioners for consultation/discussion, and the option to immediately apply material to your situation through the completion of your own practice plan. (Please note: course completion does not meet the Department of Human Services’ MTM program training requirements to receive a provider number for reimbursement of MTM program services. See Pharmaceutical Care Program for details on obtaining a provider number)

Any pharmacist who is committed to developing a MTM Practice, who is at the beginning stages of starting a practice or is interested in growing their current practice.

  • List variables to assess and methods for assessment prior to developing a MTM practice.
  • Outline important infrastructure components of a MTM practice.
  • Utilize appropriate billing and marketing opportunities and procedures for a MTM practice.

Continuing Education

CE completion requirements:

  • CE participants must be pharmacists.
  • Participants must complete course content and exams/quizzes (passing at 70%), optional assignments.
  • Following successful completion of the course requirements and an evaluation, an electronic statement of credit will be available within four weeks. Statements of credit will be available via the CE Management System.

Accreditation

ACPE logoThe University of Minnesota, College of Pharmacy is approved by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. Approved for 20 Contact hours. Following successful completion (70%) of exams and completion of the program evaluation, an electronic statement of credit will be available within four weeks. Statements of credit will be available via the CE Management System. The Universal Program Number is ACPE #031-000-07-004-H04-P. Initial release: October 1, 2007 Expiration Date: October 1, 2010

Program Design

Learning materials are organized into modules. Content modules consist of various instructional materials, including: presentations, handouts, e-symposiums, self-evaluation questions and assignments, including a practice plan. Participants will be required to pass (70%) a quiz at the end of the section.

Participants can log in and access the learning materials 24 hours/day-7 days/week, at their convenience during the course offering.

Week 1
  • Overview of the Practice of MTM
  • Performing a Community Needs Assessment for Medication Therapy Management Services: Identifying Patient Care Needs and Opportunities
  • Performing a Pharmacy Practice Needs Assessment for Medication Therapy Management Services:  Identifying the Setting and Pharmacists Ability to Provide Patient Care
  • Developing a Practice Plan Part I:  Business Plan Introduction, Creating a Vision for Your Practice, Identifying the Practice and the Environment.
  • Optional Assignment:  Developing Your Practice Plan Part I:  Intro, Vision, Practice Environment
Week 2
  • Creating the Pharmacy Practice Infrastructure:
    Space, Support Staff, Scheduling and Workflow
  • Creating the Pharmacy Practice Infrastructure: Documentation
  • E-Symposium 1: How I Convinced My Employer
  • Optional Assignment: Developing Your Practice Plan Part II: Describing Staffing Resources and Documentation Needs
Week 3
  • Collaborating with Healthcare Providers in the Community:  Establishing Relationships and Communicating with Members of the Patient’s Healthcare Team
  • Collaborative Practice Agreements
  • Optional Assignment: Developing a Practice Plan Part III Collaboration and Communication with Healthcare Providers
  • Optional Assignment: Draft a CPA pertinent to your practice
Week 4
  • Understanding Current Payers of MTM Services
  • Billing for MTM Services
  • Required: Exam 1
  • E-Symposium 2: How I broke the ice with physicians and got started with CPAs
  • Optional Assignment: Developing a Practice Plan Part IV – Incorporating a Billing Plan
Week 5
  • Proposing MTM as a Benefit to Local Employers
  • Marketing Patient Care Services to Patients, Providers and Payers
  • Optional Assignment: Developing a Practice Plan Part V: Incorporating a Marketing Plan
  • Optional Assignment: Draft marketing materials for your proposed practice
Week 6
  • Continuous Professional Development (CPD) for the MTM Pharmacists
  • Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) for your MTM Practice
  • E-Symposium 3: How I successfully recruited enough patients for a sustainable practice
  • Optional Assignment: Developing a Practice Plan Part VI: Implementing CPD and CQI
Week 7
  • Time to catch up
  • Required: Exam 2
  • E-Symposium 4: How I manage it all, seeing patients every day
  • Optional Assignment: Finalize Practice Plan and design an action plan
