Who should register

This program is designed for pharmacists, pharmacy managers, educators, and students interested in learning the practice of pharmaceutical care, its impact and key issues in establishing a practice, and the skills required to provide pharmaceutical care to patients.

 

Learning Objectives

  1. Define pharmaceutical care
  2. Describe the practice implications of pharmaceutical care as a generalist practice
  3. Explain why the use of specific and consistent vocabulary is important in the patient care practice of pharmaceutical care
  4. List the skills and knowledge required of the practitioner to provide pharmaceutical care to patients
  5. Describe the importance and use of the Standards of Practice in pharmaceutical care
  6. Identify the major steps of the patient care process in the practice
  7. Explain the role documentation plays in a patient care process
  8. List the seven categories of drug therapy problems
  9. Describe the frequency of drug therapy problems and their causes in ambulatory patients
  10. Discuss the impact of this practice on patient outcomes
  11. Quantify the economic impact of the practice
  12. List the skills/work required to establish a new pharmaceutical care practice

Continuing Education

CE completion requirements:

  1. CE participants must be pharmacists.
  2. Participants must complete three modules, each requiring approximately 4 hours of study.
  3. Following successful completion of all three quizzes and a course evaluation, an electronic statement of credit will be available within four weeks. Statements of credit will be available via the CE Management System.

Accreditation

ACPE logoThe University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy is approved by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing phramcy education.

The online course is approved for 12 contact hours. The Universal Activity Number is 031-000-08-029-H01-P. Initial Release Date: September 26, 2005. Expiration Date: October 2011.

Program Design

Learning materials are organized in to three modules. Content modules consist of various instructional materials, including: readings, presentations, self-evaluation questions and interactive exercises. Participants will be required to pass (70%) three 10 point quizzes.

Participants can log in and access the learning materials 24 hours/day-7 days/week, at their convenience during the course offering. Email and a course bulletin board are also used to pose and address questions encountered when studying.

Program Schedule

Participants may register for Level 1 at any time. Once registered, pharmacists may progress through the material at their own pace. Below is a suggested schedule for a four week completion plan. If participants intend to continue to Level 2/3, they must be mindful of the start dates for that offering. Level 2/3 is not self paced and begins four times each year.

Week 4 No new materials. Time provided to complete quizzes.

Prerequisites

Before enrolling, it is required that participants:

  1. Purchase the textbook, Pharmaceutical Care Practice: The Clinician's Guide, second edition (available at Amazon.com)
