Are you a healthcare professional interested in developing your expertise in nutrition support in hospital or homecare settings?

 

Target Audience

This program is designed for hospital and home care pharmacists interested in developing their expertise in nutrition support. In this continuing pharmacy education activity, you will learn to evaluate nutrition assessment data and develop a nutritional support plan for patients dealing with a wide range of clinical conditions. You will also be able to describe the advantages and disadvantages of TPN and enteral nutrition in different patient populations. Finally, case examples will give you the confidence to perform nutrition assessments in your own practice settings.  


In this online, knowledge-based activity, you will learn about clinical nutrition support while earning 45 CPE contact hours.

The Spring offering is April 13-May 25, 2015. Spring Registration will begin in early 2015.
 

After completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
  1. Evaluate nutrition assessment data and devise a range of estimated needs for nutrition support in light of available clinical information and constraints.
  2. Translate assessment goals into a parenteral nutrition regimen and plan for implementation, monitoring, management and discontinuation to optimize patient tolerance and safety.
  3. Compare and contrast the “two-in-one plus piggyback lipid” and the Total Nutrient Admixture system(s) used for delivering parenteral nutrition.
  4. Outline principles and alternatives for design and delivery of specialized nutrition support in clinical conditions including: renal, liver and respiratory failure; pancreatitis, hypermetabolism (metabolic stress), cancer/BMT, GI conditions and short gut.
  5. Calculate daily nutritional needs of a neonate or pediatric patient including: kcal, protein, fat carbohydrate, electrolytes, minerals, trace elements, vitamins and NPC:N. Translate these needs into a regimen including these components for a typical patient.
  6. Describe the importance of Home Care in current medical practice, and outline the pharmacist’s role in providing Home Nutrition Support in specific settings.
  7. Outline major advantages and limitations of enteral nutrition by various routes, and describe categories of commercially available enteral products and situations where each may be clinically indicated.
  8. Identify and screen clinically for major as well as common drug-nutrient interactions, and outline strategies for prevention and management.
  9. Apply discussed principles in simulated patient case examples.

During this application-based online activity, materials will be released on a weekly basis. Content modules consist of various instructional materials, including: readings, presentations, self-evaluation questions and practice cases. Supplemental readings are taken from Dipiro et al. (2005) Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiological Approach. Appleton & Lange: Stamford, CT.

Participants will be required to pass (70% or better) a 40-point mid-term exam released the third week of the course, a 60-point cumulative final exam released the fifth week of the course, and a case assignment due at the end of the this activity.
Participants can log in and access the learning materials 24 hours/day-7 days/week, at their convenience. Optional online chat sessions allow for case discussion with the instructors.

CE completion requirements
  • While anyone can take this course, only pharmacists will receive CE credit.
  • Participants must complete the activity content, two quizzes and a case assignment (passing with a 70% or better on each quiz and assignment). five modules, each requiring approximately 9 hours of study.
  • Following successful completion of the activity requirements, course evaluation, and a verification of completion form, participants will be able to access their CPE data directly from the Monitor. Once information is received by NABP, the tracking system will make CPE data for each participant available to the state boards of pharmacy where the participant is licensed or registered. Please allow 4 weeks after course completion for data to be complete.
